Name and Firm: Tracy A. Harmon is the new chef/owner of what was known for seven years as BaCar's Restaurant. His wife, Mary Frances Roberts, is co-owner. Both husband and wife have backgrounds in the food and beverage field and the hospitality industry. The restaurant has changed its name to TraMar's Franklin Street Diner.
Background: Tracy Harmon previously worked as food and beverage director for the Westin Salishan in Lincoln City, Ore. He has been managing food service at the Eaglecrest Ski Area and for the Timberline Bar & Grill at the summit of the Mount Roberts Tram, seasonal positions he will continue to fill, he said.
Harmon, 39, worked on a cruise ship for Cruise West for two years, and fell in love with Juneau and the Inside Passage. "I gave two weeks notice in June 2000 and had all my stuff shipped up from San Diego," he said.
Services: The couple took possession of the restaurant Dec. 26, did a little painting and opened Dec. 27th with the same menu former owners Barry and Carlene Shaw made popular. That includes fried trout for breakfast and corned beef hash made from scratch as well as homemade bread and cinnamon buns plus a dozen different teas. Harmon makes his own fruit pies and cream pies, so they have been added to the menu.
"It's been going great. We can't complain at all," Harmon said.
TraMar's will increase its open days from five to seven. As of Feb. 1, it will extend its hours in order to serve dinner. The dinner menu will focus on steak, seafood, pasta and "specialties." Dinner entrees will be priced between $15 and $20 with generous servings.
Quotable: "The dinner experience will be almost eclectic - meaning that we will offer attentive service, not lackadaisical - with a sense of humor. We take off our hats in this restaurant, but it's still down home," Harmon said.
