Pioneer Book Committee seeking volunteers

Posted: Wednesday, January 23, 2002

The Pioneer Book Committee has been receiving inquiries about where to buy the book "Gastineau Channel Memories, 1880 to1959." It is available at Hearthside Books for $29.95 (plus taxes and mailing cost when necessary).

A second question is, "Will there be a second book for those families that did not get into the first one?" The Book Committee may decide to do another volume if there are enough contributions to make it feasible. Another hundred family stories might do it. The next volume would cover the years 1880 to 1967, the year of the Alaska Purchase Centennial. Membership in the Pioneers of Alaska is NOT needed to participate in the book. Families should have arrived in the Juneau area by 1967. Family stories may extend beyond 1967, but they should have begun in the Juneau area by 1967. The goal of the Book Committee is to get family stories and information into print before the stories are lost and forgotten. Although no deadline has been set, we urge people to start recording their stories now. This spring we will begin to collect names of interested parties to determine the interest in being part of a second volume.

People to help compile the next book will be needed. Volunteer editors, proofreaders, researchers, interviewers, typists and photographers are important to the project.
