Solo climber halts attempt up McKinley

ANCHORAGE - A Russian climber gave up for now on his attempt at a solo winter ascent of Mount McKinley.

Artur Testov returned to his home along the Knik River.

He tried to walk from Kantishna to the base of McKinley's north face and ascend the Wickersham Wall.

Testov said he made it to the Peters Glacier near the base of the mountain, but snow conditions didn't allow him to make snow caves.

He was exhausted from two weeks of slogging through deep snow just to get there.

Temperatures averaged 20 to 30 degrees below zero.
