Knitters and crocheters have the opportunity to contribute their work to Special Olympics Alaska through the 2011 Special Olympics Alaska Scarf Project. The goal of the project is to collect 350 scarves to hand out to athletes at the 2011 Winter Games in March.
“Unique projects such as the Scarf Project truly bring both generosity and needed public awareness regarding athletes with intellectual disabilities,” said Jim Balamaci, President and CEO of Special Olympics Alaska.
Participating knitters and crocheters are asked to follow specific size and yarn color guidelines, but creativity in pattern and design are encouraged. Scarves should be 54-60 inches long, 6 inches wide and be constructed using Red Heart Yarns Super Saver 886-Blue and 512-Turqua. Completed scarves may be sent directly to the Special Olympics Alaska office at 3200 Mountain View Dr., Anchorage, AK 99501. Presales for the annual Daffodil Days, a fundraiser event for the American Cancer Society, will be open tomorrow through Feb. 9. Money raised from the event is used for cancer research, educational programs, advocacy activities and services for cancer patients and their families. In the past years, support for this program has been meet with great enthusiasm, event organizers said.
The daffodils will be delivered March 9. Daffodils will cost $10 per bundle, which consists of 10 blooms. A minimum order of 10 bundles is required for delivery. Smaller orders will be available at the Goldbelt Building between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., and at the Nugget Alaskan Outfitters in the Nugget Mall between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the day of delivery.
Pre-sales volunteers will be contacting customers for orders during the pre-sale period. If you have not been contacted by a pre-sale volunteer by Feb. 7 and you would like to order, or if you are a first-time buyer, you may contact Wanda Fleming, daffodil chairperson at 209-0889 or 364-3617.
The Learning Connection (TLC) at Cedar and Gruening Park are offering assistance with online filing for the Permanent Fund Dividend. The events are free and open to the public.
The first event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday at 1800 Northwood Drive. A second filling event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at 3410 Foster Ave.
