Humane Society recovers 17 cats from van

JUNEAU — Juneau’s Gastineau Humane Society is trying to find out how 17 cats became captured in the back of a van.

Director Chava Lee says police contacted the Humane Society in December to remove a cat from a van about to be towed. Instead of one cat, the society found 17.

The cats were taken to the society’s shelter.

Lee tells KINY-AM that some cats were spayed or neutered, which would indicate they had owners.

Two cats had microchips and were claimed by the van owner. Two others belonged to Juneau residents whom Lee says were happy to get their pets back.

Lee says the Humane Society has been unable to negotiate a settlement with the van owner and will file a neglect charge in court.

Lee says the society also is trying to find the owners of the remaining cats.
