Small avalanche on Thane, shots planned Friday

JUNEAU - A small avalanche came down on Thane Road this afternoon, and the state plans to fire avalanche control shots Friday.

Thane Road is open and passable, said Greg Patz, chief of maintenance and operations for the Southeast region of the Alaska Department of Transportation.

"A small amount came down. Just enough to put out a powder cloud and dust the road," he said.

The department will fire howitzer shots from the Treadwell Mine area across Gastineau Channel to the west slope of Mount Roberts from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday to control avalanches. Thane Road will be closed at that time, Patz said.
