KENAI - The beleaguered chief of staff to the mayor of the Kenai Peninsula Borough has resigned.

Mayor Dave Carey announced Friday he had accepted the resignation of Hugh Chumley, effective Feb. 19.

Chumley was appointed after Carey was elected in October 2008.

Chumley drew scrutiny from borough assembly members after Carey raised Chumley's salary to $97,000, nearly $23,000 more than his predecessor. The mayor later reduced his salary to $91,000.

Borough officials also said Chumley failed to file a critical piece of paperwork noting his conflict of interest in Chumley's Inc., a business that sold equipment to the borough for $18,000.

Chumley holds a 50 percent interest in the company. The transaction was canceled.
