Student plays featured at Theatre Fest

JUNEAU - The Juneau-Douglas High School drama department will present Theatre Fest Friday night at the JDHS auditorium.

The annual event offers student-directed productions. This year, three short plays and several independent scenes will be presented. Theatre Fest starts at 7 p.m. and lasts about an hour and 15 minutes.

"They're short plays," said Toby Clark, a member of the JDHS drama department. "Two were written by students."

Those are "The Way of the Gum" by Anna Gagne-Hawes and co-written by Liana Painter, and "Of God," by Rachel Cohen.

Student Emily Hemenway will direct the third play, "Snow White and Friends."

"It's a parody of the original 'Snow White,'" said Hemenway. "It's really funny. I've added a couple things. We've got a man as Snow White and we've added modern sayings and terms."

Members of the Drama, Debate and Forensics Team, the competitive component of the drama department, will perform this year as well. Clark said they will do some independent scenes.

Storytelling, music featured on Live Day

JUNEAU - Live music, poetry and storytelling will highlight Live Day, KTOO-FM's annual celebration of community talent. Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, most of the entire day's broadcasting will be live. Between noon and 6 p.m., performances will be broadcast live from the Back Room at the Silverbow.

"In years past, we've had the evening be the showcase," said organizer Jeff Brown. "This year, the afternoon will be the showcase."

Performances are free. People are welcome to come down to the Back Room and participate in the live broadcast as part of the "studio" audience. A variety of performers will present half-hour sets.

Live Day will include excerpts from the Perseverance musical "Gypsy" and the upcoming "Fry Tales" show, and poetry from Ron Reed, Manya Pungowiyi and others. Storytellers will include Anne Fuller and Becky Bear. Musicians Buddy Tabor, John Palmes, Ken Burch, Jan NiDonovan, the Taku Gaels and the Panhandle Crabgrass Revival Band will also perform.
