I was disappointed by the Empire's choice of an editorial cartoon in Monday's paper comparing the Democratic party to Osama bin Laden. It's an ugly hallmark of the Bush administration to smear political opponents by questioning their patriotism, a tactic designed to eliminate dissent. Unfortunately, it has also become routine in our national political discourse, on editorial pages and on political talk shows, to equate opposition to the Bush administration's war policies with treason and support for al-Qaida. I am disappointed that the Empire has descended to this low level of "debate."
It is absurd and insulting to the Empire's Democratic readers to imply that our party has anything in common with religious fundamentalist terrorists. The Democratic party doesn't support the imposition of theocracies on free societies. It doesn't advocate killing gays, subjugating women or promoting its agenda through terrorist attacks on innocent civilians.
What we do want is what every citizen of a democracy should demand without fear of being labeled a traitor: a responsive and accountable government.
