FAIRBANKS - A veteran Alaska state senator said he won't run for re-election this fall.
Gary Wilken, R-Fairbanks, is calling it quits after this year. He wants to spend more time with family and friends and get back into small business, he said.
Wilken was first elected in 1996. He was appointed to the Senate Finance Committee in his third year in Juneau. He was co-chairman of the committee that signs off on all spending between 2003 and 2006.
But he found himself in the minority this year when Wasilla Republican Sen. Lyda Green put together a coalition majority with Senate Democrats.
