Line crewmen worked through bitter cold this week for Alaska Electric Light & Power Co., repairing the Snettisham transmission line that an avalanche took out Jan. 12.
This week they cleared terrain so the transmission line wouldn't get snagged or abraded on its way up.
Next, a helicopter brought in sections of wire to splice onto the usable wire.
The plan is to bypass the downed tower in the avalanche zone, not replace it. The neighboring towers on either side are in somewhat less avalanche-prone areas, and are being modified slightly to take the extra load and new angles of the heavy wires.
Avalanche mitigation continues throughout the repair. Slides weren't as likely Friday, since snow on the mountain had frozen solid.
Weather permitting, the repair may be finished this week.
