JUNEAU - To combat homelessness in Juneau, the Juneau Homeless Coalition is spearheading the 2009 Homeless Count to take place on Jan. 27.
Every two years, volunteers from across the nation hit the streets to help with the Homeless Count compiled by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. Data from the count is critical to planning how to best invest public resources, demonstrating the need for federal funding, raising public awareness about homelessness, identifying the needs of homeless populations and improving the housing and services necessary to prevent and eliminate homelessness.
Juneau needs help to make the Homeless Count 2009 a success. For more information, contact Stan Marston at 780-4475 or 635-5005. He will be available from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at The Glory Hole to take actual counts.
Various local public service agencies will participate, including AWARE, Catholic Community Services, Gastineau Human Services, Juneau Youth Services, REACH, JAMI, SAIL, SRRC, Southeast Alaska Food Bank and Bartlett Hospital. Other count locations include the Polaris House, which will participate from 9:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 28; and Front Street Clinic, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 28.
