Family: Lewis always wanted to be a pilot

Posted: Monday, January 25, 2010

SAND POINT - The family of a young woman missing in a plane crash say Emily Lewis had recently moved to Alaska to become a pilot.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search this weekend for the 23-year-old woman and her co-pilot, Ameer Ali. The two were aboard a cargo plane that crashed Friday soon after takeoff near Sand Point. Search teams found only debris. The search was called off Saturday.

A spokeswoman for the Lewis family said Emily Lewis grew up in the Seattle area and was engaged to be married this year. Ellie Materi said the family would like people to know that Lewis "was a funny, sweet wonderful person who always loved flying."

Ali, 28, grew up in upstate New York and came to Alaska after serving as a flight mechanic in the Marines.
