FAIRBANKS - The ceremonial finish of the Tesoro Iron Dog Snowmachine Race is being moved from downtown Fairbanks out of safety concerns.
Race officials said the finish of the 2,000-mile snowmachine race will be on the Chena River at Pike's Waterfront Lodge.
Last year, race officials experimented with a downtown finish for the first time. While the official race clock stopped when teams reached Pike's, racers were then escorted to a ceremonial finish on the Chena River at the Cushman Street bridge.
Race director Laura Bedard said the problem this year is the possibility of open water on the Chena River near the entrance to Noyes Slough.
The Iron Dog is scheduled to start in Big Lake on Feb. 21.
