Ad-waving worker likes job — even at 40 below

FAIRBANKS — Even in temperatures hovering near 40 below, Deshaun Wilson dances on Fairbanks’ sidewalks, both to earn some money and to keep warm.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the 19-year-old Wilson is one of eight people who dress up in Statue of Liberty costumes to wave signs at motorists, advertising Liberty Tax, an income tax preparation company. While working, he wears a sea-foam green gown and hat, along with a coat and several layers of clothes. He turns up his personal music player and starts to move.

Store manager Jason Jones says three-quarters of his customers are attracted by the sign wavers. They work six or seven hour shifts, 45 minutes at a time, with a 15-minute break to rest inside.
