Ecosystem class offered for kids

A four-week environmental education series for kindergartners is being offered at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center beginning Feb. 2. The series will continue each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. until Feb. 23.

The 90 minute programs will focus on ecosystems, with U.S. Forest Service naturalists starting with observation and trees, and eventually adding other aspects of habitat and wildlife. Participants will work on projects inside and outside the center.

Space is limited and a parent or guardian must be at the series. Participants should arrive 15 minutes early.

Plant growing workshop

A presentation entitled ``Growing Alpine Plants in Juneau Rock Gardens'' is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bill Ray Center, room 153.

The seminar by Baldassare Mineo, owner of Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery, will focus on how to grow plants in Juneau's rocky terrain and the climate of the area. The workshop is free, but seating is limited to about 70 people.

UAS offers medical course

A class teaching medical transcription is being offered to Juneau students by distance delivery from the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka campus.

The three credit course starts Jan. 31. Audio conferences will be scheduled the last Monday of each month.

The class emphasizes efficient operation of transcription equipment with quality output of medical history and physical reports. The class also reinforces medical terminology.

Pageant applications being accepted

The Mrs. United States Pageant is taking applications for Mrs. Alaska 2001.

Competition will be in three areas: interview, swimsuit and evening gown. Entrants must be at least 21 years old, be married for at least two years and still living with her husband, be of good moral character and a U.S. citizen.
