Posted: Sunday, January 26, 2003

From huge brown bears to some of the richest fishing grounds in the world, southwest Alaska has a wealth of wildlife and marine life.

Its unique geology and resources are explained and pictured in "From Kodiak to Unalaska" (Alaska Geographic, Anchorage, 96 pages, paperback, $23.95).

Kodiak's bears have attracted tourists who also discover its history from Russian fur traders to World War II battles to its recent use as a polar launching site for satellites. With fish and crab in abundance, Unalaska is the nation's number one fishing port in volume.
