Former Juneau resident Dorothy (Marvin) Rhodes died Dec. 26, 2002, at her home near Loon Lake, Wash. Medical reports indicated rupture of an intracranial berry aneurysm as the cause of death.
She was born July, 1, 1960, to Lillian and Harvey Marvin at Mount Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka. In the summer of 1973, she moved to Juneau with her family and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1980. She worked a variety of jobs until she met James "Jimmy" Rhodes and they were married May 23, 1981. Jim retired from the city of Juneau and they lived briefly in several states. Together with their three children they built their home near Loon Lake. Dorothy and her family enjoyed a subsistence lifestyle. She had a garden and they used wood from their property for fuel. Her hobbies included crocheting and teaching ham radio operation.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Rhodes; daughter Faith Rhodes; sons Lance Elijah Rhodes and Enoch Harvey Rhodes; parents Lillian and Harvey Marvin of Juneau; brothers Peter (Audrey) Marvin, LeRoy Marvin of Juneau, and Charlie Marvin of Spokane, Wash.; sisters Johanna (Ray) Dandoy of Las Vegas, Nev., and Janice (Clark) Garner, of Las Vegas; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.
At her request, Rhodes was cremated. Following funeral services, her remains were buried on her property near Loon Lake. Friends and family are invited to a memorial dinner on at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall in Juneau.
