Tex-Mex restaurant opens near Lemon Cr.

A slice of Tex-Mex cuisine can now be found in Lemon Creek, since new restaurant Tejano Corner opened this week.

The restaurant is owned and operated by San Antonio native Andre Votion. The former Gastineau Human Services worker was encouraged to open the restaurant by friends and family after years of making home-cooked meals.

Votion said he buys produce and ingredients daily from nearby Costco. Votion also said he hopes he'll see more customers when Home Depot is completed in the area next year.

For the uninitiated, Tex-Mex includes beef and pork served alone or made into fajitas and tacos disguised as burritos. Tejano Corner offers takeout and serves breakfast as well.

Birth Center receives $200,000 grant

The Juneau Family Birth Center received a $200,000 grant last month from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, which will go toward constructing a new Community Family Center in town.

The center will be a campus of health, social and educational services for families. Services will include midwifery, a community birthing center and a clinic with a family-practice physician, a family therapist, a social worker, a nurse practitioner and a physician's assistant.

The center also will offer a range of support for families including on-site child-care services, pregnancy, birth and parenting education, doula support for pregnant, birthing and postpartum women, exercise classes, a family gathering space, home-visiting support, community referrals and a lending library.

Other nonprofit organizations that provide support and education to individuals and families will have an opportunity to use the classroom for support groups and classes.
