ANCHORAGE - Mark Mew pinned on the badge Monday as the 29th police chief for the Anchorage Police Department.
He's the former deputy chief of the department who left in 2003 to become security director for the Anchorage School District.
The Anchorage Daily News reported Mew was appointed chief by Mayor Dan Sullivan to shift to a community policing approach to law enforcement. The approach aims to put police closer to the people and make that relationship work to reduce crime.
Mew also said he'll look for ways to save on fuel, cut back overtime and stretch the $89 million budget. The department has about 550 people, including 400 sworn officers.
