Gov. Murkowski was recently quoted in our local paper as saying "improving transportation and access are among my top priorities for Alaska." Therefore, I find it a total mystery why his administration continues to make transportation and access to and from Haines more and more difficult.
The Fairweather is currently off-line. We now have only two ferries per week. That is the most inaccessible Haines has been since we moved here almost 15 years ago. Those with medical needs and the students in our schools who depend on the ferry for transportation will be frustrated week after week. The state paid millions of dollars to build the Fairweather and when it is running it has received nothing but praise for service and efficiency.
I encourage those in authority to please see that the Fairweather returns to service as soon as possible.
