JUNEAU - The Southeast Alaska chapter of the American Red Cross is requesting donations after providing assistance to the victims of five fires in the past six weeks.
"We've been hit pretty hard as a chapter," Executive Director Mike Cresswell said. "It's been a really, really busy season for us. ... When we have five, six, seven, eight in a row, that can be pretty challenging."
The Red Cross provides temporary housing, food and other supplies to families and individuals in the aftermath of fires. The local chapter serves Juneau and the rest of Southeast Alaska.
Cresswell said the hundreds of millions of dollars donated nationwide to the Red Cross in the past few months is not available to specific chapters for local disaster relief. He said chapters must rely on local donations for local efforts.
For Red Cross donations to go toward local disaster relief, Cresswell said checks need to be specifically made out or directed to "Southeast Alaska Chapter Disaster Relief." Donations may be sent to the local chapter at 3200 Hospital Drive, Suite 203, Juneau, AK 99801.
