Michael Naab, director of the Ketchikan Museum Department, cleans the Chief Kyan pole Wednesday in Whale Park. The 28-foot red cedar pole, carved by Israel Shotridge, was raised in the park in 1993. The pole has taken a beating from pigeons that like to perch on its top, according to Naab. The pole will be lowered and stored for a few months to dry out. Shotridge and his wife, Sue, will then repaint and repair the pole before it is raised again.
