Snowmobiles allowed at Hatcher Pass

Posted: Monday, January 28, 2008

ANCHORAGE - State parks officials have opened up the east side of Hatcher Pass to snowmobiles.

The area open to snowmobiles stretches from the Gold Mint parking lot trailhead at Mile 14 of the Hatcher Pass Road to the Summit Lake State Recreation Site, which also is open.

The trail to the summit is for mixed uses, so snowmobilers should stay within the posted speed limit and be on the lookout for hikers, skiers and snowboarders, officials said.

The telemark ski area on Hatch Peak is closed to motorized use.

To legally operate on public land, snowmobiles must be registered with the state Division of Motor Vehicles.
