Anchorage firefighters find body in rubble

Posted: Monday, January 28, 2008

ANCHORAGE - Anchorage firefighters said they found the body of an unidentified person in the rubble of a fire this weekend.

Police are investigating the death as a homicide.

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell said the body was burned so badly it was impossible to discern the person's gender.

Officials said the fire occurred in an apartment that already had been the subject of a fire call last week.

The apartment manager said the couple who lived there moved out after that first fire.

Firefighters believed they had extinguished the latest blaze and were checking through the apartment for any remnants when they found the body.

They said the fire is suspicious in origin.
