FAIRBANKS - State Representative David Guttenberg said he's optimistic his bill honoring champion sled dog musher Susan Butcher will pass this session.
House Bill 37 would establish the first Saturday in March each year as Susan Butcher Day. That's the traditional start date of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Guttenberg, a Fairbanks Democrat, filed the bill last year.
The bill moved quickly through the House and passed without opposition but was held up in the Senate Resources Committee.
The chairman of the Senate Resources Committee, Charlie Huggins, this week asked that the referral be waived and it's now in the State Affairs Committee.
Butcher died of leukemia in 2006 at the age of 51. She won the Iditarod four times.
