Dean Williams of Juneau played in his first age 85-90 tennis tournament earlier this month and knocked off the seventh-ranked player in the U.S. Tennis Association's rankings.

Williams, who was unranked nationally, claimed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory over top-seeded Bill Hussey of Laguna Woods, Calif., while playing in the Hilton Plaza Senior Tournament held Jan. 11-14 in Palm Springs, Calif. Hussey is ranked seventh nationally in the USTA's Age 85-older rankings and was selected to play international tennis in Europe this summer.

Williams said this was his last age group tournament of the winter, since none of the other tournaments have his age group. He said he plans to play in as many singles matches as he can to prepare himself for the USTA National Indoor Championships this May in Vancouver, Wash. He also plans to play in the USTA National Outdoor Championships a few weeks later in San Diego.
