ANCHORAGE — A National Guard helicopter crew rescued four skiers who were trapped in an avalanche south of Anchorage that left three of them injured.
Alaska State Troopers say the Anchorage men were hoisted to safety Saturday evening, several hours after the avalanche in the Chugach Mountains.
Three skiers were flown to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while the uninjured man was dropped off near Summit Lake Lodge.
Troopers say the four managed to pull themselves from the avalanche debris hours earlier.
The rescue was initially hampered by a high risk of a second avalanche.
The state troopers report that during the ordeal, rescuers were in communication with the skiers, who each had avalanche beacons, and eventually reached them on skies and prepared them for the helicopter retrieval.
