ANCHORAGE - A request for proposals is to be advertised in late spring for a $250 million prison in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough that would house as many as 2,251 inmates, a borough spokeswoman said Jan. 18.

The completed medium-security facility is expected to employ more than 250 at an average annual income of $48,000, plus benefits. It's still too early to say how many construction jobs may be involved, said Patty Sullivan, public affairs director for the borough.

The cost per bed was previously estimated at $135,000.

Growth related to the project will occur all over the area, but most likely in areas where natural gas is available and roads are paved and subdivisions are platted, Sullivan said. While housing construction is expected to get a boost near Point MacKenzie, it is also expected in the central area of the borough, from Sutton to Houston, she said.
