Mental health training to be offered Thursday

Posted: Sunday, January 31, 2010

JUNEAU - The Trust Training Cooperative, in collaboration with NAMI-Juneau, is offering free mental health training, called "Hearing Voices That Are Distressing," from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.

The "Hearing Voices That Are Distressing" training was developed in 1998 by Pat Deegan, from the National Empowerment Center in Boston, Mass. Deegan is a "voice hearer" and she wanted to develop a training that simulated what it was like to experience "hearing voices."

The training consists of a video lecture, a simulated experience where participants wear headphones and listen to a CD of what it may be like to hear voices and a group discussion about the experience, an introduction to some coping strategies offered by Deegan's curriculum and how to help someone experiencing auditory hallucinations.

Upon completion, participants will receive a training certificate honored by the Trust Training Cooperative. Space is limited. For more information or to sign up, call 463-4251.
