It was with deep sorrow I read the passing of Bob Beierly in October last. Bob served with us as a member of Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols in Germany during 1961 and 1962.
Prior to that he served with us as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division Brigade in Mainz, Germany. Everyone whose life Bob touched was left with a fond remembrance of a loyal, witty, uncomplaining trooper who consistently corrected us that he was an Inuit when we teasingly referred to him as an Eskimo. In fact, when he developed pneumonia as a result of a severe field exercise, our Colonel stated he did not think Eskimos got pneumonia.
He was promptly corrected by Bob who told him he was not an Eskimo but an Inuit. It is ironic that while I was seeking Bob out for a reunion that I learned of the passing of our dear brother. Rest well old brother - you have earned it!
