JUNEAU - Juneau-Douglas High School recognized eight students on Thursday as part of a monthly student recognition program.
"This is not a 'popularity' contest. It is the JDHS staff's opportunity to reward and publicly acknowledge what being a good world citizen is all about," said Student Recognition parent supporter Virginia Stonkus, in an e-mail about the event.
Teachers nominated the students for a variety of reasons, some of which were that they helped out other students, significantly improved a low grade, or work very hard.
At the end of the school year, organizers draw one of the year's recognized student's names out of a hat. That student receives one year's tuition to attend the University of Alaska Southeast.
Students the school recognized Thursday are Rachel Everett, Lawrence Fenumiai, Tanya Garcia, Kohl Jaeger, William Lott, Chariece Sarabia, Sheron Schramm and Hannah Wilson.
