Moose kicks Alaska boy on way to school

FAIRBANKS - A 12-year-old Alaska boy suffered a bruised ankle when a moose kicked him while the boy was on his way to school.

Brandon Rustad said he has taken plenty of hits playing hockey but it was nothing like the one he took from a cow moose while he walking to school Friday morning.

The sixth-grader at Nordale Elementary School in east Fairbanks said he heard something behind him, turned and saw the moose, then started walking faster.

But the moose started walking faster too, and when Brandon started to run, the moose kicked him with a front foot, knocking the boy into a ditch along the road before running off.

Wildlife biologist Don Young said a 71-year-old Anchorage man was stomped to death by a moose 15 years ago. But Young said retreating from a moose and trying to give it as much space as possible usually works.
