Norman C. Edwards Jr. died peacefully in his home in Amagansett, N.Y., surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren Jan. 19, 2011, after a two-year fight with stage-four brain cancer (gioblastoma). He is son to the late Capt. Norman C. Edwards Sr. and Elsie Johnson Edwards of Amagansett, N.Y. He is great-grandson to
Joshua B. Edwards, who his family wrote was “the last man to harpoon a whale from an open boat in the Atlantic off Amagansett, and a pioneer in the menhaden, or ‘bunker,’ fishery.”
Norman C. Edwards Jr. was born Sept. 7, 1946 in Southhampton, N.Y. a decorated veteran of the United States Coast Guard, who retired after 30 years of honorable service with the rank of captain. During his Coast Guard service, he was commodore of Coast Guard Squadron 42. He also commanded four separate cutters, held one shore command and served in numerous other leadership roles. Edwards was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various leadership roles in Juneau, and more recently, in Riverhead, N.Y. He was also an elected member of the East Hampton N.Y. Town Board of Trustees.
Edwards graduated from the Coast Guard Academy. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in oceanography from Florida State University and later earned a master’s degree in physical oceanography. He was also licensed as a Master Mariner for unlimited vessel tonnages.
He married Lynda White Edwards on June 9, 1973. Lynda survives him, as do his sons Samuel Edwards of Phoenix and Zachariah Edwards of Juneau, and his daughters Elan Edwards Eddington of Tokyo and Sarai Edwards Timothy of Juneau.
Pallbearers were Samuel Edwards, Zachariah Edwards, Aaron Eddington, Scott Timothy, Harold McMahon, Keith McMahon, Johnathan Baker and Jonathan Edwards.
