Forest Service info center moves out of downtown

The Forest Service is moving its information center this spring from Centennial Hall to the Juneau Ranger District office on Old Dairy Road.

The number of visitors to the office downtown has decreased the past two years.

"Between the Internet, phone, fax and e-mail, most of our customers no longer work with us in person," center director Nita Nettleton said. "We can do our forest information and permit work over the phone and through the mail."

The Forest Service hopes to better serve the public by consolidating staff and resources in one location.

The center should be moved and ready to open at Old Dairy Road by April 2.

"We're taking our phone numbers with us, so most of our customers won't know we've moved," Nettleton said. The main phone number is 586-8751.
