Ketchikan gusts knock down trees

Posted: Sunday, February 01, 2009

KETCHIKAN - Strong winds that blew a state ferry off its mooring in Metlakatla also knocked down trees and a power lines in nearby Ketchikan.

The damage Thursday night and Friday cut electricity to much of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and prompted the Ketchikan School District to cancel school at Fawn Mountain Elementary.

Schools Superintendent Robert Boyle says he canceled school after learning that power likely would remain out at the school through Friday afternoon.

The high winds ripped the Alaska Marine Highway ferry Lituya from its mooring lines in Metlakatla and pushed it onto a nearby island. The vessel was refloated Friday afternoon.

Ketchikan International Airport reported a peak wind gust of 58 mph Thursday night.
