Kalskag school fire resembles 1995 blaze

Posted: Sunday, February 01, 2009

ANCHORAGE - The superintendent of the Kuspuk School District says the fire that destroyed the high school at Kalskag is at least a $5 million loss.

Brad Allen was counting the loss of the building plus the computers, sports equipment and other goods that students and staff left behind when fire broke out Wednesday.

It was the second time in 14 years that the George Morgan Senior High School burned in the village of 250 about 348 miles west of Anchorage.

In both cases, the school had no sprinkler system to stop the flames and in both cases the local fire tanker was not operating.

Both fires started in the shop area. Investigators from the state fire marshal's office say they have found no signs of foul play.
