Southeast Alaska Middle School Wrestling Tournament: First round starts at 2 p.m. Friday at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym, then continues Saturday with the second round from 9 a.m. to noon, semifinals from 2-4 p.m., consolation finals from 5-6 p.m. and finals from 6-8 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 3

Juneau Alpine Club Cowee Meadows ski trip: This is a low-level energy trip lasting about six hours and going about six miles. Bring skis or snowshoes. Info: Ellen Pavitt, 790-2976.

Juneau Parks and Recreation Saturday hike: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Peterson Lake Cabin Trailhead, Mile 24.1 Glacier Highway, for a moderate, nine-mile round-trip hike with 600 feet of elevation gain. Wear waterproof hiking or rubber boots and warm layers of clothing. Bring a flashlight and plenty of food and water. No dogs or firearms allowed. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Juneau-Douglas High School boys basketball: The Service Cougars play the Crimson Bears at Juneau-Douglas High School gym, varsity game at 7 p.m. (broadcast on KINY, 800-AM).

Sunday, Feb. 11

Southeast Road Runners 18th Annual Sweethearts Relay: Meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Douglas Firehall for this two-person relay that starts at 1 p.m. The first runner completes a two-mile leg, and the second runner covers three miles. Info: John and Jamie Bursell, 789-5997.

Ongoing/Meetings

Juneau Jumpers skills workshop: Meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Glacier Valley School Gym. The workshop, open to students grades K-8, will teach basic and intermediate jump rope skills. The cost is $25, which includes a jump rope and snack. Limited to 45 jumpers, so reserve a spot early. Gastineau Channel Little League board meeting: Meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Floyd Dryden Middle School Room No. 100. Reports will be heard from Jim Douglas on his attendance at umpire school and by GCLL president Allan MacKinnon on his attendance at the league officers meeting. Juneau 4-H cross-country ski program: Meet from 1:30-3 p.m. every Sunday at locations TBA (call the University of Alaska Southeast Cooperative Extension Service for the location of that week's outing). The program is open to skiers in grades K-12, and parents are invited to participate. Membership fee for 4-H program is $6. Juneau Parks and Recreation coed volleyball officials needed: Officials are needed for the Juneau Parks and Recreation coed volleyball season, which starts play Feb. 12. Officials are paid $9.23 per match. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Avalanche awareness classes: Upcoming avalanche awareness classes from the Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center are Juneau Level II, March 2-5. Mini-workshops for snowmachiners are Haines Snowmachine/Level I, March 16-18, and Petersburg Snowmachine/Level I, Feb. 2-4. Special snowmachiner discount this year. Info: Bill Glude, 586-5606.

Juneau Parks and Recreation summer shelter reservations: Reservations may be made starting on Thursday, Feb. 1, for the summer use of the shelters at Twin Lakes and Cope Park and the use of the shelters and volleyball courts at Sandy Beach/Savikko Park. The shelters and courts can be reserved from April 20 through Sept. 16. Twin Lakes rents for $10 an hour, while Cope Park and the Sandy Beach/Savikko Park shelters rent for $15 an hour. There is no charge to reserve the volleyball courts. Reservations must be made in person at the Juneau Parks and Recreation office in City Hall and payment must be made with the reservation. Open Gyms

Youth open gyms: From 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (2/3) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School, and from 8-11 p.m. on Fridays (2/2) at Floyd Dryden Middle School. No cost for students grades 5-12. Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms: at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School, Cost is $4. From 7-9 p.m. on Sundays (2/4) and Fridays (2/9, no open gym will be held on 2/2). Gastineau Channel Little League open gyms: Open gyms are on Sundays through March 18.
