Kids battle Saturday (over books)

The District Battle of the Books will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday at Floyd Dryden Middle School.

Sponsored by Delta Kappa Gamma, the event features elementary and middle school teams competing by grade level, answering questions about books that have been previously read and studied. Each grade-level winner goes on to compete in a statewide battle of the books.

Spaghetti fundraiser set for Feb. 9

Hot Spaghetti - Cool Jazz, a dinner with music and a dessert auction is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Juneau-Douglas High School commons.

Musical entertainment will include the JDHS Jazz Band and the Floyd Dryden Jazz Band. Funds raised will go to the JDHS Wind Ensemble and its March trip to New York's Carnegie Hall Wind Band Festival.

Tickets are available at Hearthside Books. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students (ages 2-9) and $30 for families. Tables for six can be reserved by e-mailing Lisa Golisek at

Small-business seminar Feb. 7

A free workshop for small-business owners will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at Centennial Hall, 4101 Egan Drive.

Topics will include access to the capital, training and counseling, government contracting, available resources for start-up businesses, information on how to write a business plan, fundamentals of leasing and information on vocational job training opportunities in Alaska.

The workshop is sponsored by the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development in cooperation with the Small Business Administration, Anchorage National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), YWCA Anchorage Women's Finances, Ravenwood Real Estate, Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and the office of Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

Salsa fundraiser set for Feb. 11

The Juneau Montessori School and Southeast Alaska Friends of Montessori are sponsoring the fifth annual Hot Salsa-Cool Ballroom Dance and Auction fundraiser from 7:30 p.m. to midnight, Feb. 11 at Centennial Hall.

Live music will be provided by Salsa Borealis and The Thunder Mountain Big Band, featuring renowned trombone player Bruce Paulson. Simple dance instruction to some of these dance styles will start at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at Hearthside Books, through parents and at the school at 364-3535. The cost is $17 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors, $20 at the door.

Childcare will be provided on site: $10 for the first child and $5 for siblings.

Proceeds from this fundraising will help Montessori programs replenish teaching materials, continue paying for a music teacher for the elementary classrooms, continue providing kindergarten scholarships for families of modest means.

Thirty percent of students receive tuition assistance and invest in professional development for our teaching staff.
