Student Artist in the Spotlight: Sean Niewoehner

Posted: Friday, February 03, 2006

Age: 11

Grade: 5

School: Gastineau Elementary School

Art of choice: Sean is interested in the visual arts: painting, drawing, sketching and weaving.

How it started: Building with Legos is what got him interested in art.

All in the family: Nearly everyone in his family does art. His mother has been doing art "all her life."

Favorite artists: He likes Pablo Picasso. When he's tired, he enjoys listening to soft music, and when he's in a "jumpy" mood he likes to listen to rock 'n' roll.

Future plans: Sean hopes to continue doing art. He wants to go to college and play baseball and hockey in college.

Activities: He participates in hockey, archery, baseball and volleyball. And he also likes to draw, watch movies and go to church every Sunday.

What if: Sean imagines how it might be if artists could draw with different shapes of markers: lamps, waterbottles and other unusual shapes.

Hero: He looks up to Mark McGwire.

You should know: He can cook; his best dish is waffles. He also loves to be funny.

His teacher, Cinda Stanek, says: "Sean is an amazing artist who consistently shows great balance of color, balance of shapes within a piece, blending of colors, creativity and focus! Sean shows a love of art, doing art, studying art and a pride in the artwork he does. Sean basically has a wonderful love of life and creativity - which comes out strong in his art and his sense of humor!"
