PORTLAND, Ore. - Fred Meyer Stores raised nearly $63,000 for the American Red Cross Haiti disaster Relief Fund, the store announced on Wednesday.
Fred Meyer's 130 stores located in Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Idaho used coin boxes to raise the money. In 2008, coin boxes raised an average of $10,000 dollars per week.
"Without our generous and compassionate customers, we would not be able to make an initiative like this happen," said Melinda Merrill, public affairs director for Fred Meyer Stores. "Even the smallest individual donation of a few coins can add up to a significant contribution to the overall aid efforts."
Fred Meyer had hoped to raise $20,000 during it's 30-day fundraiser, but ended up tripling that amount.
