Mekoryuk man killed in snowmachine crash on Nunivak Island

ANCHORAGE - Alaska state troopers say a man driving a snowmachine in whiteout conditions went over a cliff, crashed through river ice and drowned.

The Anchorage Daily News reports it happened Saturday as a 63-year-old Mekoryuk man, Hultman Kiokun, was trying to navigate home by GPS on Nunivak Island, 150 miles west of Bethel.

The man's 26-year-old son was traveling with him but was unable to save him.

Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said they had been gathering wood when the weather changed. Both were traveling about 20 mph when they went over a 50-foot cliff and hit the Mekoryuk River. Kiokun's snowmachine and sled landed on top of him.
