Crimson Bears to be tested at Dimond

Tourney will be a good measuring stick for Juneau-Douglas girls

Juneau-Douglas will find out exactly where it fits into the greater scheme of Alaska girls' basketball this week after competing in the 2010 Dimond Lynx Prep Shootout basketball tournament in Anchorage.

Sixteen of the state's 3A and 4A teams will participate, including most of the Crimson Bears' top threats to their march toward the school's first state title since the 2004-05 season.

"We're excited to get up there and see some teams we haven't seen yet," coach Lesslie Knight said Tuesday. "There will be 16 teams there. We'll get a sneak preview of everybody in the state, pretty much. We will get to see Colony, who is coming down here in a couple of weeks, and we'll also get to see Wasilla, Dimond and West (Anchorage), who are some teams who aren't on our schedule."

Wasilla is the only other team that holds a victory over Southeast Conference and Crimson Bear archrival Ketchikan this season, in addition to JDHS, which split with the Kings Jan. 15-16.

"Wasilla has a very tall post who is 6-4, 6-5ish," Knight said. "We'll see how we can do defending her."

The Bears will face 3A Anchorage Christian today at 2:45 p.m. The winner will advance to the Gold Tournament bracket. The loser will go to the Maroon Tournament bracket.

"They were a fairly strong team last year," Knight said of Anchorage Christian. "I don't think they're as strong this year, so we're hoping it's a good draw for us because it's based on that game whether we go to the maroon bracket or the gold."

Junior guard Nani Ostrom said it should be a great, competitive trip.

"We're looking forward to seeing some new competition," she said. "This is actually my first Anchorage trip. I know Ketchikan is going to be there, so it will be good to see them again."

Ostrom said this week of practice has been business as usual.

"We've been doing a lot of conditioning and just trying to stay in shape," she said. "We've been cleaning up some of our plays and working on our offense a little bit."
