"There are many family members who take care of their parent or grandparent," explains Andrea Ebona-Michel, elderly services coordinator for Central Council of Tlingit Haida.
"Family caregivers tend to focus totally on the person they are taking care of and ignore their own needs and health." As the coordinator of the family caregiver program for T&H, Ebona-Michel is dedicated to helping family members manage the challenges of care giving and begin working on taking care of their own health. Ebona-Michel is currently coordinating a caregiver training workshop entitled "Yanwaat Latini" (in Tlingit it means Elders' Watch), along with the Tlingit & Haida Elders Caregivers Council and local caregiver agencies.
The workshop is designed for family members who take care of T&H elders and is a follow-up to the successful T&H caregiver training workshop held in May of 2003. This event is being planned to offer additional information to family caregivers to gain more skills in these areas. The workshop will also include a new health promotion program for caregivers.
The workshop is free and is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the ANB Hall in Juneau.
The program will begin with honoring the members of the T&H Elders
