Cub Scouts from Pack 7, Bear Den, have constructed and painted a recycling bin, which will soon be placed on the school grounds at Mendenhall River Community School for families to use.
The Bear Den - which consists of third grade MRCS students Kyle Stephens, George Grummett, J.C. Norvell and Zach Gianotti - constructed and painted two recycling bins with the help of Kyle's father, Kristan Stephens, a local building contractor. Each year the boys choose a service project to complete for the good of the community. This year, while reading about taking care of Mother Earth in their Bear Scout books, the boys decided to build two bins for collecting plastics. The other bin will be placed at the church of one of the scouts.
The recycling center at Juneau's landfill recently started accepting No.1 and No. 2 plastics. These lightweight plastic containers make up the bulk of gallon milk jugs and most water and sports drink bottles.
