Sloss wins district spelling bee

The Juneau School District recently held its annual city spelling bee. First- and second-place winners from each elementary and middle school qualified to participate. The competition was fierce from these talented spellers. Marlena Sloss won the bee; Arthur Ackerman was the runner-up. To win the bee, Sloss had to correctly spell "bribery" and the winning word, "sinew".

Marlena Sloss will go on to Anchorage to compete in the state bee, which will be held Feb. 3-4. The following students were winners of their school bees and participated in the city competition:

Harborview: Cole Carnahan, Marlena Sloss

Mendenhall River: Colton Welch, Olga Lipson

River Bend: Liam Greeson, Holly Kulm

Gastineau: Claire Swanson, Matthew Campbel

Auke Bay: Spencer Lunda, Rosie Jones

Glacier Valley: Olivia Van Kirk, Gabrielle Fenumiai

Dzantik'i Heeni: Arthur Ackerman, Brian Beckner
