Neil Tyler Brown, 52, passed away in Anchorage Jan. 21, 2011, after a short-term illness.
Neil was born in Juneau on Jan. 29, 1959 and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1977. He enjoyed nature and spent a couple of summers working on trails, building catwalks through marshes and walking bridges across creeks. He liked swimming, and was a member of JDHS’ swim team. Neil also enjoyed chess and hiking. His family wrote “Neil was a gentle, kind and soft-spoken person who will be dearly missed.”
Neil is a descendant of three chiefs’ families and is a member of the Deisheetaan Raven House. His Tlingit name was Ge-xwunx’.
Neil is preceded in death by his father Roy C. Brown; brothers Lawrence Roy and Michael Alan; sister Audrey Diane; step-father Terry Pegues and mother June (Bennett) Klushkan.
He is survived by siblings Jim Brown, Pam Brown, Mark Brown, Terrence Pegues, Mary Guthrie, Gary Austin and Carrie (Todd) Prophet; nephews Harold and Walter (Rose) Johns; nieces Amberly and Lindsey (Gary) Brown and grand-nieces and -nephews Casey, Phyllis, Caitlyn, Elizabeth, Joseph, Ethan, Chris and Keerah.
A memorial service is planned for Neil at the Anchor House in Anchorage. He will be buried beside his grandmother Annie Bennett in Angoon.
A memorial fund for Neil has been established at the 1st National Bank of Alaska, account No. 30822035, to help defray costs. Any contributions will be appreciated.
