'Banner' student suspension put on hold

JUNEAU - The 10-day suspension of Juneau-Douglas High School student Joseph Frederick for displaying a banner reading "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" last month has been stayed pending an appeal hearing.

Frederick was suspended Jan. 24 after he was among a group of people who displayed the drug-referencing banner as the Olympic torch passed the school. Frederick said he would return to school today.

Schools Superintendent Gary Bader said it is standard district policy to hold a suspension in abeyance while an appeal hearing is pending.
