We need a real energy program in the United States immediately. Our dependency on oil has us leading the world for the production of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gasses. If only we raised our fuel standards to 40 mpg for cars and light trucks it would produce twice as much gas as drilling the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Drilling in this area will come on line in 10 years and it will take 20 to 30 years until we run out of oil there. If we inflated our tires to proper pressure, gave tax incentives for alternative fuels and hybrid vehicles, reinvested in public transportation, invested in inter-city rail construction and promoted smart growth legislation, there would be no push for drilling in the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd. These are a few of the things we need to do before squandering all of our public resources.
We need to end our dependency on oil and lead the world in development of renewable energy.
We need to stop obstructing treaties supporting the environment in this world. There is a dependency with people of the world. It is not us against the rest of the world, and that is the direction we appear to be headed.
I oppose drilling on the calving ground of the Porcupine caribou herd in ANWR.
