Juneau skiers shine in AML Series

Denton sweeps all four women's events, local skiers win nine of 14 races

Posted: Tuesday, February 05, 2002

Juneau Ski Club racers had a strong finish on the final day of the Alaska Marine Lines Race Series, claiming three victories in the slalom at Eaglecrest Ski Area on Sunday.

Heidi Denton completed a clean sweep of the Junior Olympic qualifier races with a win in the women's J-1/J-2 class slalom. Brandon Andrews won the men's class J-1/J-2 slalom and John Love won the men's class J-3/J-4 slalom.

Although Denton was the only woman in her J-1 class, her dominance could still be judged in comparison to the men her same age.

Denton's ran her first slalom run in 47.66 and second run in 43.00 for a combined time of 1:30.66, which would have been good enough for fifth place in the men's J-1/J-2 race. In Denton's giant slalom victory on Saturday, her time would have placed her seventh in the men's race. She started out the AML Series with a pair of victories in the women's super giant slalom races on Thursday and Friday.

Juneau Ski Club assistant coach Heidi Reifenstein placed second Sunday, but her finish did not count towards Junior Olympic qualifying, giving Juneau's Akemi Kunibe a second-place finish in a combined time of 1:41.96. Kunibe had a good week with a second-place finish in Thursday's Super G, and a third in the giant slalom on Saturday.

Brandon Andrews capped off a solid week with his slalom win. His combined time of 1:28.19 just edged teammate J.C. Grochow who placed second by a mere 0.09 seconds. Richard Isett Jr., fresh off his victory in the giant slalom on Saturday, placed third in a combined time of 1:29.56.

John Love carved an overwhelming win in the men's J-3/J-4 slalom with a combined time of 1:18.67, well ahead of teammate Christopher Hinkley who ran a combined time of 1:24.60. Juneau's Joshua Young's time of 1:24.84 just nicked his younger brother, Zachary, who took third place with a combined time of 1:25.13.

The Anchorage Ski Club also found some success by sweeping the top three spots in the women's J-3/J-4 slalom. Brittany Mumma won in a combined time of 1:29.60, Melinda Bartel was second in 1:30.13 and Alannah Rice placed third in 1:30.38.

Juneau's top finishers in the women's J-3/J-4 slalom were sisters Elise and Gabrielle Wahto, who placed a very close fourth and fifth, respectively.

Throughout the AML Race Series, Juneau claimed nine victories in 14 races, including all of the men's and women's J-1 and J-2 races. Denton led the way with four victories. Brian Nowlin won both men's J-1/J-2 Super G races, while Isett, Andrews and Love round out Juneau's individual winners.

The racers will have one more shot at Junior Olympics qualifying when they travel to Girdwood on Feb. 9-17 for the Alyeska Cup. Nine men and seven women from Alaska in both combined classes of J-1/J-2 and J-3/J-4 will qualify for the Western Regionals later this season.
